Frequently asked Virgin Media questions
Can you change your Virgin Media package?
Virgin makes it very easy to cancel, change, upgrade or even downgrade your existing package. There’s often no need to even pick up the phone either, as all changes to your Virgin Media package can be via logging into My Virgin Media using your login credentials.
If you’d rather call Virgin to see what your options are with your current package, you can get in contact with them by phoning 150 from your Virgin Media mobile or landline, or by phoning 0345 454 111 from another phone.
What are the cheapest Virgin Media packages?
The cheapest Virgin Media packages are usually broadband packages on their own. You can opt for broadband with a phone line which will come with Weekend Chatter, but this will come at an extra cost (not available with M125 Broadband).
For example, at the time of writing (01/05/24), M125 Fibre Broadband with a 132Mbps average download speed and a 20Mbps average upload speed, is just £26.50 a month.
Are there Virgin Media packages for existing customers?
While a lot of the Virgin Media packages you’ll see out on the market are targeted for new customers in order for Virgin to gain new customers, there are still packages available for existing customers.
As we have mentioned above, current customers of Virgin are able to alter their packages by signing into My Virgin Media. Alternatively, you can phone Virgin’s customer service team if you need some help finding what’s available to you as an existing customer.
What can you add to Virgin Media packages?
Upon checking out with your chosen Virgin package you’ll have the option to add your favourite subscriptions to your deal. The following applies only if you have opted to add Virgin Stream to your Virgin package (all per month):
- TNT Sports - £18
- Sky Cinema HD - £14.99
- Sky Sports SD & HD - SD = £31.75 | HD = ££38.75
- Sky Sports & Sky Cinema SD & HD - SD = £39.25 | HD = £46.25
- Premier Sports - £12.99
- MUTV - £7
- Liverpool FCTV - £7
- Racing TV - £22
- Kids Pack - £5
- Baby TV - £3.50
- Asian Mela - £12
- Adult Collection - £17
- Netflix - Available upon request
- Disney+ - Available upon request
How can you cancel your Virgin Media package?
You can cancel your Virgin Media package in the same way you can change it, by logging into My Virgin Media. Calling up to speak to an advisor is also an option.
Are Virgin Media packages available in your area?
Virgin Media deals are only available in certain areas, which can be checked via the postcode checker that you'll be taken to after clicking on one of the deals above.
Can you get out of your Virgin contract without paying cancellation fees?
Cancelling your Virgin Media contract early can land you with some pretty hefty early exit fees. The exit fees you pay depend on the monthly expense of your current Virgin Media package, the stipulations of which can be found here: Virgin Media Early Disconnection Fees. Virgin does say, however, that they cap all cancellation fees at £288, which also includes VAT.
On the topic of escaping cancellation fees, Virgin states the following on its website:
If you’re moving outside our network area but still within the UK and give us some valid evidence of your new address, we’ll credit you back the early disconnection fee. When submitting your disconnection request, our team will explain the next steps and you’ll get a request for valid proof of your new UK address. If we get this back within 30 days and it’s validated, we’ll apply a credit to the value of your early disconnection fee to your account. If you’ve already been billed for your early disconnection fee before we apply the credit, we’ll still apply the credit to your account.
How is Virgin Media Broadband different from BT Broadband?
BT uses the Openreach Network, along with others such as Sky, TalkTalk, NOW and Plusnet. Virgin runs on a completely different network, one that used to belong to Telewest, an old cable internet and telephone provider.
The Openreach Network operates predominantly on a fibre-to-the-cabinet basis (FTTC). A fibre optic cable will run from a telephone exchange to your local green cabinet, from which a copper telephone wire will run to your home and deliver your internet speeds.
Some providers on the Openreach network will offer fibre to the premises (FTTP), which uses fibre optic cable all the way to your home, cutting out the need for copper phone wire, and increasing speeds exponentially.
On the other hand, Virgin Media’s network is built using a coaxial electrical cable, which is able to transfer speeds extremely quickly. However, as the coaxial network is quite old it is not quite as reliable as Openreach’s network, but offers superior speeds to standard FTTC broadband.
FTTP, while much harder to come by than Virgin Broadband or Openreach FTTC broadband, reigns supreme, delivering the fastest and most reliable speeds on the market using fibre optic cabling.
