Back to the Future Day | What it’s about & how to celebrate
It’s truly a special day for all fans who recognise it.
Back to the Future is a beloved Hollywood classic, with the original film in the trilogy still spoken about today as an all-time great flick.
With the film seeing the characters fly into their version of our present day, fans of the series have taken to celebrate the classic each year on what is now known as Back to the Future Day.
With the special day coming up this weekend, we bring you information on the occasion, including when exactly it is, how it is celebrated, and more.
What is Back to the Future Day?
Back to the Future Day is simply a celebration of the classic film series. The movies have been immortalised by fans, especially those who grew up when the first film was released.
Michael J Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Llyod as Emmett “Doc” Brown were inspired casting choices to the point that if anyone else had played their roles, the films probably wouldn’t have been as successful as they are.
In the second movie, Marty and Doc travel to 2015 to stop Marty’s son from sabotaging the McFly family’s future.
Since the film put a date to travel to that wasn’t too far into the future from when it was released, fans took it upon themselves to celebrate when the date came around that year.
Now, every year fans continue to celebrate the day, bringing about Back to the Future Day.
When is Back to the Future Day?
Back to the Future Day is celebrated on the day Marty travels to in 2015, which was the 21st of October that year.
So now, every year on 21st October, fans celebrate Back to the Future Day despite the date to which Marty travelled to having already passed. It’s more of a tradition at this point - a great one at that.
This year, it falls on a Saturday, making it perfect to lazy around and spend your afternoon/evening watching all three movies back-to-back-to-back (if you wanted to celebrate the day, of course. It’s not a legal requirement).
How do you celebrate Back to the Future Day?
There is but one true way to celebrate Back to the Future Day - by binge-watching all three movies on 21st October!
Some small theatres may even make an event of it, hosting showings of one or all the movies on the day (although admittedly it is more of an American thing to do).
Some fans even dress up and cosplay as the characters to watch the films, really showing their love and dedication to the films!
