The 77th BAFTA Awards happened on Sunday (yes, we know we’re late but better late than never!), bringing another opportunity to highlight the best in cinema over the past 12 months.

There was a lot to celebrate across all genres of film, most importantly the people involved that brought said movies to life.

Hosted by David Tennant for the first time, this year’s ceremony saw the usual suspects that have been popping up rather frequently this award season, in particular the masterpiece that is Oppenheimer.

The latest epic from Christopher Nolan has been sweeping up at every ceremony so far, and it was no different in London.

Oppenheimer received the most nominations this year with 13, seeing not just the film itself but multiple personnel involved getting a nod too.

Of their 13 nominations, they won seven of them, including Best Film, Best Director for Nolan and Best Actor for the film's lead Cillian Murphy.

It was a well-deserved win for the Peaky Blinders star as he turned in a stellar performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer. While it was far from the first time he and Nolan had worked together, it was the first time the celebrated director had given him a starring role, and he repaid him greatly.

His co-star, the iconic Robert Downey Jr., also saw gold as he once again this award season took home the Best Supporting Actor award.

On the actress’ side, Margot Robbie can feel somewhat vindicated after her Oscar snub as she was nominated for Best Actress at this ceremony.

Unfortunately, though, she did not get the win as Emma Stone won her second Best Actress BAFTA for her turn in Poor Things.

In fact, Barbie as a whole didn’t receive many nods, only getting five nominations but winning none of them. 

While that shouldn’t be too much of a surprise given that comedy films don’t often win big at these ceremonies, the movie was the biggest of 2023 and maybe should have deserved at least one trophy.

Another film that was largely snubbed at the Oscars was the popular (mainly online) Saltburn. The British film was given some flowers, receiving five nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Score and Outstanding British Film. 

Despite the recognition and popularity around the internet world, it failed to take home any awards.

Being the British Academy Film Awards, there were several awards for British films specifically, with Poor Things and The Zone of Interest picking up a number of wins each.
