Sky Cinema: Newest Must-Watches

The Woman King

The Woman King tells the true story of the Agojie, a fierce all-female warrior troop who were the protectors of The Kingdom of Dahomey (located within present-day Benin).

Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) stars as a general who trains the next generation of Agojie warriors, preparing them for the coming conflict in a war against the neighbouring Oyo Empire.

The Woman King is a powerful and inspiring film that tells an important story about female empowerment and strength, and the performances by Davis and the supporting cast are all top-notch.

Nope

Jordan Peele returns with another horror masterclass, this time with neo-Western science fiction horror, Nope, starring Keke Palmer (Alice) and Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out).

Palmer and Kaluuya are siblings who discover a UFO that is hanging around nearby their horse ranch and decide to try to capture footage of it and sell the evidence. But as ever with Jordan Peele's movies, things are never what they seem.

Nope is a visually stunning film and as with all of Peele’s works in the genre so far, it has some truly hard-hitting moments that will have you wincing and watching through the gaps of your fingers as you cover your eyes.

Emily

The story of Emily Bronte is one that isn’t well documented, but this semi-fictional account of the Wuthering Heights writer paints a picture that romanticises the young author's life in a classy way.

Emily is a beautifully shot and atmospheric film that captures the dark and stormy world of the Bronte family. Emma Mackey (Sex Education) gives a stunning performance as Emily, bringing her to life with passion, intelligence, and vulnerability.

Sky Cinema: Best Hidden Gems

Armageddon Time

Armageddon Time is a beautifully made film that captures the essence of a specific time and place. It follows a young Jewish boy named Paul, played by Banks Repeta, as he navigates the challenges of growing up in Queens, New York, in the early 1980s.

The film stars many top names such as Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs), Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), Jessica Chastain (The Help), and Jeremy Strong (Succession).

With a stellar cast such as this, it's unsurprising that the performances are all excellent which brings an undeniable emotional impact and makes for a well-made and thoughtful film.

Broker

Broker is a South Korean mystery drama film that follows a group of people who become involved in the world of baby boxes, where unwanted newborns are left anonymously for adoption.

It is a moving and thought-provoking film that explores the complex issues of adoption, family, and belonging. The performances are all excellent, and the film's understated style allows the story to unfold naturally and without judgment.

The Lost King

The true story of The Lost King follows Philippa Langley, played by Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), who defies the academic establishment to follow her instincts to find the remains of King Richard III.

Based on the book The King's Grave: The Search for Richard III, written by the real-life Philippa Langley, The Lost King tells the well-documented story of the search for the long-past kings’ remains and the treatment of Langley from the University of Leicester.

Sky Cinema: Coming Soon

Babylon

Director Damien Chazelle (La La Land) brings the wild Golden Age of Hollywood back to life as Babylon examines the rise and fall of movie stars from a time when the industry was transitioning from silent films to sound in the 1920s.

The story revolves around aspiring star Nellie LaRoy, played by Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street), with her story being told through the eyes of a Mexican immigrant named Manuel 'Manny' Torres, played by Diego Calva.

Brad Pitt (Fight Club), Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man), and Olivia Wilde (Don’t Worry Darling) also feature in this hectic and visually stunning depiction of the early days of Tinseltown.

The Silent Twins

The Silent Twins tells the story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, identical twins who grew up in Wales in the 1960s and 70s. As part of the only black family in their small town, the sisters refused to communicate with anyone but each other.

Letitia Wright (Black Panther) and Tamara Lawrance (The Long Song), star as the sisters who try to find their way back from silence and into the community.

Maggie Moore(s)

Jon Hamm (Mad Men) stars in this offbeat murder mystery as a small-town police chief who investigates the murders of two women - who coincidentally share the same name.

An entertaining modern noir that is sure to appeal to those who love crime comedies that also features Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso).
