Bioshock film in the works at Netflix
A previous attempt to adapt the game was binned due to concerns over its large budget and R rating.
An adaptation of the critically-acclaimed video game Bioshock is in development at Netflix.
After a year of negotiations, the streaming giant has officially reached an agreement to partner with studio Take-Two Interactive (the parent company of Bioshock’s publisher 2K games) and Vertigo Entertainment to produce this adaptation.
No writer or director is currently attached but there are reportedly already plans to create a Bioshock cinematic universe.
First released in 2007, Bioshock sees you play as Jack, the sole survivor of a plane crash in the Atlantic Ocean. He’s soon transported to the mysterious underwater city of Rapture which is in the middle of a civil war.
Many of its inhabitants are using a dangerous drug known as ADAM which grants you superpowers and living in fear of Big Daddies, terrifying mutated humans who’ve been grafted to old fashioned diving suits.
It received hugely positive reviews upon its release and has sold millions of copies since. Two equally well-received sequels, Bioshock 2 and Bioshock Infinite, followed in 2010 and 2013 respectively.
Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski previously attempted to get a Bioshock film off the ground back in 2009. Universal eventually cancelled the project due to budgetary concerns and Verbinski’s insistence that it be rated R rather than PG-13.
