Entertainment news update 20/12: Teaser trailers, series delays & more
Movie & TV news from across the week so far…
What We Do in the Shadows to end after Season 6
Taika Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows series (not to be confused with the 2014 movie of the same name) will unfortunately be meeting its end in its sixth season.
The show has largely gone under the radar for most but boasts a dedicated fanbase for those who do know, one that has seen steady growth over the past year.
Production on the sixth season of the vampire horror-comedy mockumentary is set to begin in January 2024, with a release date potentially set for later that year or sometime in 2025.
Many fans have taken to X/Twitter to voice their grief about the news, with all in agreement that it is a huge shame that it will no longer be continuing.
For those interested in checking the show out and becoming part of the devoted fanbase before the show disappears forever, all five seasons can be found on Disney+ in the UK.
Star Wars: Andor Season 2 delayed till 2025
Another unfortunate series announcement for a show on Disney+ comes in the form of Star Wars series Andor, with the second season being delayed out of 2024.
The first season, released in 2022, was a big hit with fans of the popular franchise, hailing it as arguably the best live-action Star Wars show to date.
The Diego Luna-led series was originally set to release its second season in August 2024; however, Disney’s recently released list of films and shows premiering in 2024 did not include Andor season 2.
Disney and Lucasfilm have not given a reason as to the delay, but given that The Acolyte, Skeleton Crew, The Bad Batch Season 3, and Tales of the Jedi Season 2 are all still listed for 2024 release, it may be that they wanted to trim the schedule down slightly so each project can have its time to shine.
The Hunger Games prequel available on digital now
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is already out on digital platforms in the US despite still performing well in cinemas.
The Hunger Games prequel movie has made just under $300m at the box office at the current time of writing.
Unfortunately, it is only available to purchase on digital platforms in the US, meaning us here in the UK will have to wait a bit before being able to watch it at home.
Peaky Blinders getting two spinoffs
Peaky Blinders is set to be getting something of a revival, with two spinoffs planned to come.
These two projects are separate from the previously spoken about spinoff movie, which writer Steven Knight has described as being in the final stages of being written.
As for these other two projects, they will both be new series and will likely take place in different time periods to that of the original series.
The first will be focused on Polly, the matriach of the Shelby family. Given that the original actress Helen McCrory sadly passed away in 2021, the series will likely focus on Polly’s upbringing and her start in the family business.
As for the other series, it is said to be set in Boston in the middle of the 20th century, moving away from the British gangster scene. It will likely follow on from the storyline of Jack Nelson from season six, who was a South Boston crime leader who came to play in the streets of Birmingham.
That is all we know so far about the spinoffs, but hopefully, more details will come sooner rather than later.
First look at Adam Sandler’s upcoming Netflix movie Spaceman
Adam Sandler is poised for another turn at a more serious role in the upcoming Netflix original movie Spaceman.
A short teaser trailer has been released for the streaming service's upcoming film, simply depicting Sandler walking alone on an alien planet wearing a spacesuit.
The story will follow Sandler as Jakub, the first Czech astronaut, who befriends a stowaway alien and searches for a way to salvage his marriage - or at least what’s left of it when he returns home.
The film will have a limited cast so it will be another test of the comedy actors’ acting chops, something which he has already begun flexing in other projects such as 2019s Uncut Gems.
Spaceman is set to be released on Netflix on 1st March 2024.
