The Crown wins big at 2021 Emmy Awards
The show took home the trophy for Best Drama series along with Lead Actress in a Drama series for Olivia Colman.
Netflix’s hit royal drama The Crown was the big winner at last night’s 2021 Emmy Awards.
Taking place at the Microsoft Theatre in L.A and hosted by Cedric The Entertainer, the series beat out fellow Netflix favourite Bridgerton, Lovecraft Country, The Handmaid’s Tale and Pose to win the prestigious Best Drama Series award.
It also scored an impressive four wins in the acting categories with Lead Actress in a Drama for Olivia Colman, Lead Actor in a Drama for Josh O’Connor, Supporting Actress in a Drama for Gillian Anderson and Supporting Actor in a Drama for Tobias Menzies.
"What a lovely end to the most extraordinary journey with this lovely family," said Colman, who is set to be replaced by Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II for The Crown’s upcoming fifth season.
“I loved every second of it and I can't wait to see what happens next."
Another big winner of the night was Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso which follows small town American football coach (Jason Sudeikis) as he’s recruited to train a Premier League team.
Sudeikis took home the award for Lead Actor in a Comedy while his co-stars Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham received Supporting Actor in a Comedy and Supporting Actress in a Comedy respectively.
One of Netflix’s other major shows of last year The Queen’s Gambit won Best Limited Series but, despite winning rave reviews for her performance, star Anya Taylor-Joy lost out to Mare of Easttown’s Kate Winslet in the Lead Actress in a Limited Series/Movie category.
The streaming giant took 44 trophies across this year’s Emmys and Creative Arts Emmys beating out rivals HBO and HBO Max by a considerable margin.
The premium US network and its streaming service won 19 awards followed by Disney+ with 14 and Apple TV+ with 10.
